Week 1 - Reflection
When it comes to telling cinematic stories, I have always been drawn to tales tangled within the horror genre. Whether it be a psychological thriller or a Halloween-esque slasher, the genre and its many faces is what draws me into this course, and more specifically my own individuality that I wish to explore through the lens of horror.
The horror genre historically ignores queer representation (aside from Vampire sub-genre which is unashamedly homoerotic), therefore the niche of queer-centric horror films that takes itself seriously with a specific point of view is one that is only recently coming to light. The days of gimmick queer horror are behind us, and I believe my progressive way of viewing genre films is the point of view needed to succeed in this course.
My drive is in my expression of queer representation through the narrative constructs of the horror perspective. To tell tales that tackle LGBTQ+ modern tribulations in a way I am yet to see within the genre. The idea of each of my short scripts existing within the same universe with minor interlinks is one I am eager to explore, to use my lens as a way of exploring deeper and more personal narratives. I think entertainment value is still a crucial part of horror for me, so to intertwine that will an ability to communicate both queer issues and values is vital in my constructs, and in how I want to communicate my own POV as a screenwriter and creative.
